How do Fire Alarm Systems Work?
Fire detection and alarm systems comprise a number of visual and audio devices that work together to detect and alert people to the presence of smoke, fire, carbon monoxide and other emergencies. These can be vital in saving lives in addition to preventing and minimising fire damage to property.
Alarms can be set to activate automatically, such as smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and heat detectors. Alarms might also be manually activated devices that work via call points.
Conventional fire alarm systems have changed little over the years in terms of technology, although design and reliability have improved significantly.
SD Fire Solutions offers various fire alarm systems:-
Conventional Fire Alarm Systems
A conventional fire alarm system (sometimes referred to as a 4 wire system) consists of automatic detectors and manual call points wired to the fire alarm control panel in Zones. Each Zone is a physical wiring circuit. The fire alarm control panel has a number of Zone LEDs which will illuminate should a device in that zone be activated. The purpose of Zones are to provide an indication of where a fire has been detected.
The control panel is then wired separately to a minimum of two sounder circuits which accommodate the systems audible warning devices (e.g. bells, electronic sounders etc). Each detection circuit and sounder circuit has an end of line device (resistor) for monitoring purposes.
Analogue addressable fire alarm systems
These differ from conventional fire alarm systems in a number of ways, adding more flexibility, intelligence, speed of identification and scope of control. This makes Analogue Addressable Fire Alarm Systems the natural choice for commercial premises, such as Houses of Multiple Occupancy (HMO) properties and offices, which may require a more complex alarm system.
Wire free wireless fire alarm systems
We also have radio based wire-free alarm systems, which incorporate a number of unique features that makes them an ideal alternative to wired systems.
All our fire alarm systems are simple to operate and user friendly. We provide full training to reduce the risk of common operational problems for customers, so you and your premises can remain fully protected from fire and associated problems at all times.
We provide a fast and friendly response to all enquiries and offer a survey service to establish your exact needs. It is very important that we examine your requirements thoroughly before offering advice or recommending a suitable solution.
What happens next?
One of our team will come and discuss your fire alarm budget; also survey the premises thoroughly. We can them give you expert advice on fire detection.
We will specify a customised alarm system that fits your requirements, then give you a written explanation and a quote to undertake the work.
Whether you want a fire alarm system in Sutton, fire alarm commissioning in London, fire extinguisher servicing in Carshalton, or an intruder alarm fitted in Wimbledon, SD Fire Solutions can help with this and any associated Life Safety Systems. We work across Surrey and London.

Here are a few of the Fire Alarm systems we install and most importantly certify for your insurance and compliance…
Conventional Fire Systems – Kentec, Advanced, Haes, C-tec, Twinflex, JSB etc.
These systems are based on zoning of areas and are suitable for small to medium size premises including apartment buildings, offices and shops. The fire resistant cabling is usually installed from the main entrance of the premisses to each zone area and incorporates smoke and heat detectors along with manual break glass units and electronic sounders.
Addressable Fire Systems – Gent, Advanced, Kentec, Morley, C-tec, etc.
These types of system allow the user to see the precise location of the detector or manual break glass activated and are generally suitable for medium to larger buildings, where the location of the activation is more critical. These systems are intelligent and more versatile to extend and adapted to changing operations or uses. Printers and Networking can also be achieved with these type of systems and can interface to a multitude of other services to control and signal others.
Radio Fire Systems – Hyfire authorised partner, EMS, EDA, etc.
Radio technology has the addressable panel advantages, without the need for wiring. These types of systems are most advantageous; in listed buildings, as temporary fire alarm systems, buildings where wiring is not cost effective, or if minimal disruption is required to a working environment. These systems are ideal for quick turn around properties for example HMO properties that have tenants moving in but requires a fire detection system.
Aspiration Systems – V.E.S.D.A , Xtralis, , etc.
VESDA systems give very early detection of smoke and are therefore suitable for protecting business critical areas such as server rooms or other IT installations. They are also used where access for regular servicing is limited or inaccessible i.e. Church’s and lofts.
The systems give up to 4 levels of activation – e.g. Alert, Action, Fire 1 and Fire 2 – to allow for escalating responses.
